Lenovo prides itself in giving back as a top priority on a local and global scale. We not only want to serve our customers but the communities they make up as well. While volunteering is one of the main actions Lenovo demonstrates to show communities love, we have not limited ourselves to just that. Aligning with our mission to lead and enable the worlds technological transformation, Lenovo is making an impact on the welfare of our planet with some of our latest product releases as well as seeking out organizations with common goals to partner with on a global scale.
The Work for Humankind Program
The Work for Humankind program is unique Lenovo volunteer initiative that was revealed in December of 2021. Powered by Lenovo Tech, this incredible opportunity involves a partnership with Island Conservation and Robinson Crusoe Island community.
Volunteers from around the world will be selected to experience how to provide a lasting impact on the Robinson Crusoe Island community that is more than 400 miles off the coast of Chile, all while working from a super remote location. This community faces several challenges including education, healthcare and invasive species. While there have been projects initiated over the last decade to solve these issues, they are constantly facing technology errors in the process.
The lucky selected volunteers will come from a diverse skillset and assist the community work towards achieving sustainability all while continuing to work remotely in their current roles. The Intelligent Devices Group within Lenovo is creating a cutting-edge technology hub with services like high-speed internet connectivity that will aid to the long-term goals of the island. Work for Humankind is a seamless way for Lenovo to use in house technological and employee resources to make a lasting global impact. Learn more about the Work for Humankind project.
Products Made from Sustainable Materials
In early 2022 Lenovo revealed the ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 devices. These contemporary systems reflect a shift in technology and how we can use raw components in our products. The models feature sustainable materials like recycled black vegan leather and recycled aluminum. Sustainability does not end there. Both laptops are packaged in 100% recyclable and compostable bamboo and sugarcane.
The AC power adapter also uses 90% Post-Consumer Content, which is essentially a product created from materials that have been recycled or found in a landfill. As the 30th anniversary of the ThinkPad approaches it is impressive to see the evolution of not only the products but the intention behind the materials that make them. The possibilities are endless for how Lenovo will find innovative ways to decrease their environmental footprint as a company and show love to our planet.
Showing Love to Our Own Community
Lenovo also continues to show gratitude to the Triangle region of North Carolina that has been home to one of our two global headquarters for more than 16 years. Our North Carolinian colleagues are constantly transforming Lenovo in a multitude of ways and the company wants to ensure we are a positive contributor to the Triangle region and North Carolina as a whole.
One symbol of that appreciation was the Evolve Small initiative that was designed to aid small businesses recovering from the pandemic. The program originated in Raleigh and has now expanded throughout the United States. Lenovo is proud to call North Carolina home and is committed to enhancing the community. Powercoders & Empowering Tech Professionals
At Lenovo we strongly standby making Smarter Technology For All a reality, which is why we seek organizations to partner with that have a common goal. Powercoders is a charitable organization that does just that. They support refugees who exhibit promise as coders and software engineers and give them the digital skills needed to access jobs and create a new life for themselves. Powercoders was founded in 2017 in Bern, Switzerland by Christian Hirsig and has since expanded to Italy and Spain.
The program takes a small number of students already showing promise in the computer space and teach them basic programming and coding skills they need for the broad IT job market. The program finishes with an internship with a technology company, giving them the foundation, they need to build a career in the IT space. Lenovo has supported the initiative in Italy over the past two years by giving each student at Powercoders a laptop. The relationship between Lenovo and Powercoders reflects the company’s commitment to advancing communities globally in the world of technology.
The Lenovo Foundation
The Lenovo Foundation’s goal is to provide Smarter Technology for All by empowering under-represented communities with access to technology and STEM education. As a philanthropic arm of Lenovo, the organization uses the companies employee expertise of global diversity and product innovation to create a stronger community where we live and work.
At the end of 2021 the Lenovo Foundation launched a USD $1 Million TransforME grant to support tech skills. TransforMe’s focus on skilling adult populations from underrepresented backgrounds with the essential skills for today’s tech workforce. Key skills include data analytics, software and web development, artificial intelligence, IT support and hardware repairs.
Love On Global Month of Service
The Lenovo Love On Global Month of Service is an annual event spanning across a full month. Lenovo’s month of service is directed by the Lenovo global philanthropy team and led by philanthropy experts in each of Lenovo’s geographies. Each unique project is led by a Lenovo employee volunteer and gives each country the chance to connect with a local organization or initiative leading the charge on giving back to the community.
