Overcoming oneself on the road to successful small business ownership with Annette Presley

Next up in our Small Business Inspirational Series is Annette Presley, owner and nutritionist at Revived Woman, a woman-focused wellness consulting business. Presley shares a surprisingly relatable challenge she faced in growing her business and how she discovered personal growth as a key solution.

In a word, [the greatest challenge I have faced is my business is] myself.

I am legitimately an expert with over 30 years of experience in the field of nutrition and I get my clients great results. In fact, I usually hear from them two days after we meet telling me how much energy they have and how great they feel.

While I’m great with clients, I wasn’t so great at running a business.

I was inconsistent, I didn’t have a solid plan, and I was always second guessing myself. I discovered that being an expert has a downside; we know too much and because of that we know how much we still don’t know which can lead to indecisiveness.

You can’t run a business on indecisiveness.

Since I felt insecure in my decisions, I would try to copy other businesses and was basically throwing spaghetti at the wall, hoping something would stick that I could run with.

The problem with going about business in that way is that I left myself, what brought me joy, and my unique voice out of the business and those are the things potential clients really need from me.

Anyone can give diet advice, but no one else puts things together like I do for a truly holistic approach to wellness. And, if I’m not happy in my business because I’m doing things that are not aligned with who I am and what I want, I’m going to send mixed messages to potential clients instead of a clear path forward.

So, I got clear on what I wanted, what I wanted my business to do for me, and the outcomes I wanted for my clients. I hired a branding expert to help me put together a business that aligned with my core values, helped me show up consistently, and brings me joy.

I recently implemented the 12-week year (by Brian Moran) and love it so much I’m incorporating it into my client work as it allows for better focus and consistency while minimizing overwhelm. It brings more objectivity to help with decision making.

What I’m finding is that the number one thing needed is personal growth. You have to think differently when running a business, you have to know your value, and you step into who you really are with confidence.

The best investment I’ve made in my business is in myself.

Learning how to think differently with more objectivity and less judgment helps my business grow by allowing me to focus on the things that really matter and let go of the things that don’t do much to move the needle.

Putting systems in place that help with consistency, so clients know what to expect and I know what action steps to take every day, makes the business run smoothly with less stress.

Getting out of my own way, recognizing my value and my expertise, helps me create amazing programs for my clients that get them the results they want.

And most importantly, creating a business that brings me joy allows me to help others in a way that feeds my soul instead of burning me out.
