  • I don't care who you are, if you work in IT, you WILL get burnt out at some point. Most of your day is solving other people's problems. No one has EVER called to say "Hey Chris, my email is working great today, and my computer is running super fast! Good job buddy!" Nope. 9 out of 10 calls are typically folks calling to let me know something is broken or to complain about something that hasn't been functioning correctly for months, and I'm just finding out about it. It's a stressful job and as a small IT shop in a 24/7 operation, I'm pretty much on-call 24/7. Burn out is inevitable.

How do we identify it? Well, I'm sure you've seen those "Hangry" Snickers commercials or are familiar with The Hulk. If you've "hulked out" but can't see it yourself, pay attention to other's reactions when interacting with you. Sometimes it's good to see yourself thru other's eyes.

So, how do we combat this? Well, one shoe won't fit everyone, so you really need to find what YOU need to decompress. I like to clear my head with a nice walk-about or hike. Releasing the stress of work (and life in general) with a healthy dose of nature's sights, sounds and smells seems to work wonders for me. Also, drink lots of water. Coffee, soda, etc are stimulants, not what you need when trying to relax!

If "IT'S ALL JUST TOO MUCH!!!" take a personal day, or a vacation, if you can. The work will be there when you get back. Take care of YOU first, because if you don't, you won't be 100% when you need to help your customers or clients.

tl;dr: Burnout is inevitable in IT. Find your happy place and visit it often! If you're suffering, so will your work and clients.

  • The people I work with have learned to never start my day "this is my problem".  If they don't at least greet me in the morning, I just ignore them, a few kind words go a long way.
