Pros and cons of cloud computing

Cloud-based computing has emerged as a flexible, secure and effective solution for many businesses, large and small. The cost and time saving can be huge and the agility offered with such a solution can enable incredible business growth and goal achievement. But cloud computing isn't one-size-fits-all. What may work for a national construction company may not work for a local media company and vice versa.

What are some pros, cons and considerations when looking to transition to the cloud?

  • Cloud considerations:

    Infrastructure - If your a small business, the cloud can provide many benefits to help keep costs and maintenance low. Capital costs can be large, especially at start-up.  The cloud can provide the infrastructure to help you manage many problems that are strictly IT related.  Let the cloud worry about IT so you can focus on growing your business.  Some things to consider regarding infrastructure:

    • Storage needs - How much data will you be storing?  
    • Server needs - Do you need multiple servers, ie. applications, data, middle tier?
    • Security - Who needs access to the application or data?  How will you keep hackers out?  What about viruses?  
    • Technical expertise - When there's a problem with the infrastructure, do you have the expertise to resolve it?  How would you manage an emergency patch from a vendor that affects the o/s, application or database?
    • Scalability - As your business grows, the infrastructure has to be in place to support the added workload.
  • Thanks for the information. There is definitely a lot to to think about. When starting up. The cloud would be a great benefit and on less worry.

    Not only for startups. Many big corporations go to the clouds to reduce maintenance costs and add flexibility/scalability.
