If you use Claude for anything — drafting, coding, summarizing- you’ll want to know about this, because the headlines are running hotter than the facts.

What’s actually happening: Anthropic confirmed on an updated support page that it will watermark text generated by its models to comply with European regulations. All models released after August 2, 2026 automatically include tech to watermark both computer-generated text and files, using the C2PA open standard for files. The regulatory trigger is EU AI Act Article 50, which became enforceable August 2, 2026, requiring providers of generative AI to embed machine-readable marks so downstream users and regulators can identify AI-generated content.

The watermark is invisible and, per Anthropic, doesn’t change the quality or readability of the text. Because it’s part of the text, it travels when you copy and paste, and may persist through some editing. But, and this matters, a heavy rewrite or a translation may knock it out. Here’s the nuance almost every hot take is missing: the mark signals that Claude processed the text, not that Claude authored it. If you ask Claude to proofread, translate, or reformat your own writing, you get back a Claude-marked document; the mark doesn’t distinguish between Claude generating the content and Claude lightly correcting your punctuation. So this isn’t “Anthropic is stealing credit for your work”; it’s “any text that passed through Claude carries a signal that it did.”

Two things I think are fair to flag:

Anthropic applied this globally — nothing in the EU code requires marking text generated for a developer in Boise, but they did it anyway, “wherever Claude is offered, worldwide.” There’s no non-EU region where you get unmarked output.

And on how robust it is: Anthropic has asked people to trust its technical claims without yet publishing the detection specifications that would let third parties independently verify them, though the company says it will provide detection details as required under EU law.

Why I’m posting this here: a lot of us use these tools for client-facing and professional work. This isn’t a reason to stop; the watermark is invisible and doesn’t degrade output — but it is something to be aware of if provenance matters in your field. And it’s not just Anthropic: nearly 200 companies including Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI have signed the same EU transparency code. This is where the whole industry is heading.

What do you think about this?

I’m Colin, founder and CEO of WiFixIT, an IT service company based in Hamburg, Germany.

I recently found my way to the Lenovo Pro Community through the Small Business Month Grant 2026, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to introduce myself and WiFixIT.

I started WiFixIT around three years ago as a small local IT business. What began with individual PC repairs and support jobs has since grown into a business supporting both private customers and small and medium-sized companies.

Today, our work covers pretty much everything you would expect from an external IT department for smaller businesses: IT support and troubleshooting, networks and Wi-Fi, servers, Microsoft environments, cybersecurity, backup solutions, hardware deployments, ongoing managed IT support and Automation.

And that's probably one of the things I enjoy most about running WiFixIT: no two days are really the same. One day I'm troubleshooting a single laptop, the next I'm rebuilding a company network, planning a server migration or helping a business modernise its entire IT infrastructure.

I’m still relatively new to the Lenovo Pro Community, but I’m looking forward to getting to know other business owners and IT professionals here, exchanging experiences, talking tech and business, and making some new connections along the way.

So, hi from Hamburg! 👋
Looking forward to being part of the community.

Colin
Founder & CEO, WiFixIT
